Happy 50th Birthday, Hearty Burgundy!
First crafted in 1964, Gallo Family Vineyards’ Hearty Burgundy proudly celebrates 50 years as America’s first truly iconic red blend. Affordable in price and approachable in taste, Hearty Burgundy was the favorite wine of Gallo’s founders Ernest and Julio. The brothers originally made the wine as an ode to the wines they enjoyed in Italy gathered around the dinner table with family and friends sharing great food and conversation. The meals they enjoyed were typically full of pasta, bold red sauce and spicy meats – a true Italian dinner table. They needed a wine to stand up to these dishes, which led to the creation of Hearty Burgundy.
Throughout the past 50 years, Hearty Burgundy has made quite the impact on the American wine industry. From gracing many dinner tables to becoming a hot topic among wine critics and media, Hearty Burgundy found a place on many dinner tables across the country. In fact, the wine appeared on the 1972 cover of TIME magazine as a symbol of the growing American wine industry.

Harkening back to its first vintage, this limited edition 50th anniversary blend of Hearty Burgundy was crafted after careful consultation with the blend’s original winemakers, including Master Winemakers Marcello Monticelli and Peter Vella. They strived to craft a rich blend of dark berry and red plum flavors with subtle hints of oak that the American consumer embraced so dearly.
